PoliticsGermany: CDU suffers a crushing defeat in regional elections

Germany’s regional elections produced mixed results for the main parties. The far-right AfD won the largest vote share in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania but remains isolated after other parties ruled out coalition talks, leaving incumbent SPD premier Manuela Schwesig a realistic route to forming a government. In Berlin, the Left Party led and could potentially join the Greens and SPD, while the CDU performed poorly in both elections.
