US President Donald Trump announced a deal that, according to the White House, would strengthen the US military presence in Greenland and give Washington permanent responsibility for the island’s security. Greenlandic and Danish leaders welcomed the agreement. Trump had repeatedly threatened to annex the Arctic territory and at times suggested he might use force.
