European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has endorsed proposals for Canada to become the European Union’s first “associate member,” saying she wants to work on “opening the door” to closer cooperation in key sectors. US President Donald Trump said he might cut off trade with Europe or impose heavy tariffs if Canada joins the EU.
