Higher petrol, diesel and airfares lifted UK inflation to 3.1% in the year to August, up from 2.9% and the highest rate in five months. The ONS said petrol prices reached their highest level in nearly four years as the continuing conflict in the Middle East disrupted global oil supplies, while diesel prices also surged.
