A quarter century after the attacks that defined an era, the United States is trying to preserve memories of the 2001 trauma as more Americans have no firsthand experience of it. President Donald Trump will pay his respects at the Pentagon rather than in New York, where hijacked airliners hit the World Trade Center towers and caused the largest share of the day’s 2,977 recorded deaths.
