> The Republican Party has opened its national convention in Dallas, the first such gathering held during a midterm election year. Donald Trump has cast it as a “truly historic event”, but it will focus on a rally-style effort to energise the MAGA base rather than formal party business. Pressure from the Iran conflict and higher fuel prices is making November’s congressional contest tougher for Republicans.
