PoliticsGermany’s far-right AfD celebrates eastern victory but falls short of majority

The far-right Alternative for Germany has won a decisive victory in Saxony-Anhalt, taking 43.8% compared with 17.2% for the conservative CDU. Preliminary results leave the AfD short of the majority needed to govern alone, setting up difficult talks over who will lead the state. Its state leader, Ulrich Siegmund, called the result “sensational” and said voters had given the party a mandate to govern.
