# Meta and Mark Zuckerberg could face up to $1.4 trillion in landmark lawsuit

> Opening arguments began Tuesday in California in a landmark case against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. Attorneys general from four states are seeking a penalty that could theoretically reach US$1.4 trillion, along with changes to the platforms’ operations. In all, 29 states allege Meta designed its services to harm children and fuel anxiety and depression.
