Former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says Attorney General Todd Blanche is partly right that the Justice Department should not operate independently of the White House. Gonzales says the attorney general should follow the president’s law-enforcement priorities but remain independent on investigations and prosecutions, calling public presidential orders to target someone without a legal basis absolutely wrong.
