PoliticsDemocrats are solving the wrong problems | Fareed’s Take
Democrats are confronting a dilemma that was clearly exposed by Michigan’s Senate primary. Abdul El-Sayed, a charismatic progressive, defeated establishment-backed moderate Rep. Haley Stevens, and his campaign plainly generated more energy. Yet a Washington Post analysis found that El-Sayed’s support was concentrated in Michigan’s most highly educated counties and college towns. Stevens performed better across many rural and lower-income areas. Fareed Zakaria argues that this reveals a Democratic problem: the left may be emphasizing the concerns and constituencies that do not translate into broader electoral strength.
