August 11 is associated with several events in U.S. history. In 1965, deadly riots and looting erupted in Los Angeles’ predominantly Black Watts neighborhood and continued for six days. The Mall of America opened in Bloomington, Minnesota, in 1992. Alex Haley, author of Roots, was born in Ithaca, New York, in 1921, while abstract painter Jackson Pollock died in a Long Island car crash in 1956 at age 44.
