Mercedes-Benz, once highly successful with Chinese buyers because of its German engineering, sold just 1,153 vehicles in China during the first half of 2026. Xiaomi delivered more than 80,000 similarly priced SU7 sedans over the same period. BMW, Volkswagen and Porsche are facing comparable difficulties, each reporting a second-quarter sales decline of at least 30%. That was worse than the contraction in China’s overall auto market.
