> Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey have signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, declaring that an attack on one partner would be treated as an attack on all three. Some analysts have labelled the pact between majority-Muslim powers an “Islamic Nato”, although the signatories themselves have not used that term. The central question is whether they would truly come to one another’s aid if doing so meant entering a wider Middle East conflict. Iran has launched strikes on Saudi Arabia, putting that commitment under scrutiny.
