ScienceAI designs viruses for the first time: should humans worry?

US researchers say AI has, for the first time, generated complete viral genomes able to replicate in laboratory conditions. The work produced 16 entirely new viruses, designed to infect bacteria rather than humans, so they do not threaten people. Scientists say the achievement reveals a new generative-AI ability to construct complex biological systems and could support disease treatments and the development of new antibiotics. Experts nevertheless warn that AI-designed viruses pose an “urgent” security risk and say the technology may require tighter regulation.
