PoliticsWhy did Iran appoint former IRGC chief Mohsen Rezaei to a top security post?

Iran has appointed former Revolutionary Guards commander-in-chief Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. He replaces Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr in the senior security role. President Masoud Pezeshkian also held a rare meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. Mojtaba has not appeared publicly since succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after his assassination at the start of the war on February 28. Rezaei is 71.
