South Africa has commemorated the 70th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women’s March. About 20,000 women marched to the capital at the time to protest apartheid. National Women’s Day now provides an occasion to celebrate the rights and freedoms achieved through the country’s democracy. Yet many women say the struggle for equality and justice remains far from over, seven decades after the march.
