PoliticsTodd Blanche narrowly confirmed as US attorney general despite concerns over Trump ties

The US Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as attorney general by a narrow 50–49 vote. Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer had been serving as acting attorney general and will now permanently head the Justice Department. Democrats unanimously opposed the nomination, while two Republicans also resisted it. Critics raised concerns about Blanche’s relationship with Trump and the department’s independence. Some Republican senators supported him after he agreed to cancel a controversial $1 billion proposal.
