WorldVanishing wonders: Can Latin America’s treasures be saved?

Machu Picchu and Honduras’ Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve are among Latin America’s most valuable World Heritage sites, but both face mounting threats. Tourism, climate change, illegal logging, cattle ranching, mining and drug trafficking are putting their survival at risk. In Peru, growing visitor numbers are speeding up erosion at Machu Picchu and straining its fragile landscape and infrastructure. In Honduras, deforestation and illegal activity are damaging the rainforest and endangering the reserve’s future.
