WorldCape Verde: Illegal sand extraction for construction erodes coastline

Parts of Santiago island in Cape Verde have lost much of their postcard-perfect beach image. For decades, sea sand has been illegally removed to supply the construction industry, steadily eating away at the coastline. The trade is now threatening local ecosystems and contributing to farmland salinization. Women are also being pushed to risk their health in order to survive through this illegal activity.
