PoliticsIsrael: Eisenkot tapped to form new government

After Israel’s inconclusive October 27 election, President Isaac Herzog tasked Gadi Eisenkot with forming the next government. Sixty-seven lawmakers, including members of Arab-led parties, backed Eisenkot, compared with 46 for incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Eisenkot has 28 days, with a possible two-week extension, to secure a coalition supported by at least 61 of the Knesset’s 120 members. Having ruled out a government with Arab-led parties, he may seek backing from two unnamed parties.
