CultureVOA Interviews Han Suyin on Her Memories of the Cultural Revolution

Chinese American writer Teresa Buczacki recalls the upheaval and fractured humanity she witnessed during the Cultural Revolution in an interview with VOA. She describes her grandmother’s home being searched eight times, listening secretly to Voice of America while living in Xinjiang, and using literature to resist the era’s pressures. Buczacki also remembers Lao She’s farewell words and the Red Guards’ denunciation of him. She calls for a direct reckoning with the history of the Cultural Revolution.
