WorldUN political mission ends in Somalia without a replacement for election disputes

The U.N. political mission in Somalia closes Saturday, ending three decades of mediation and support for rebuilding institutions after the civil war. The government calls the move a milestone in managing its own affairs, while critics say its departure removes a key avenue for resolving political disputes. Leaders remain divided over elections, and al-Qaida-linked militants continue fighting. U.N. aid agencies and African Union forces will stay in the country.
