EconomyUK chancellor to cut tariffs on marmalade and other goods to ease cost-of-living pressures

UK Chancellor John Healey will remove import taxes on marmalade, gherkins and more than 100 other products ahead of the Budget, saying the move is intended to give families breathing space amid the cost of living. The government will also address a so-called cliff edge in carer’s allowance payments and make higher tax-free mileage rates permanent. The Conservatives called the cheaper-gherkins offer an insult to families hit by Labour tax rises.
