> Nearly 1,000 people were arrested as hundreds of thousands joined protests across France. Demonstrations were mostly peaceful during the day on Saturday, but clashes broke out late in several cities, including Paris, where police used tear gas and water cannons. The interior ministry estimated 410,000 protesters, while unions put the figure at about 800,000.
