ScienceJapan launches mission to collect samples from Phobos

Scientists are unsure whether Mars’s moon Phobos is a captured asteroid or debris from an ancient impact on Mars. Japan’s MMX mission aims to land there and collect surface samples. The Idefix rover will survey the terrain and help identify a safe landing site; if all goes to plan, the samples will return to Earth in 2031 with clues about Mars’s origins.
