WorldHundreds arrested as violent protests sweep France, with buildings burned and looted

Protesters and police clashed violently in French cities during the latest demonstrations over education standards and the cost of living. The government described the unrest as an escalation in violence; at least 400 people were arrested as more than 500,000 took to the streets. Riot police used tear gas and water cannon in Paris, where buildings and sites elsewhere, including Limoges, were set alight.
