> Thousands demonstrated in Brussels against the federal government’s austerity plans. The main union rally was peaceful, police said, but a group on its sidelines clashed with officers and threw debris. Riot police used tear gas, water cannon and batons. Police put attendance at about 30,000, while the union had estimated 50,000.
