> The chinstrap penguin breeding population on Zavodovski Island near Antarctica has fallen 63% since 2011, ending the colony’s status as the world’s largest. British Antarctic Survey researchers say warming seas are pushing the penguins’ main food, Antarctic krill, southward beyond their foraging range. With few suitable breeding islands farther south, continued declines could put the species at risk of being classified as endangered.
