# Macron says France backs closer Canada-EU ties

> French President Emmanuel Macron said France strongly supports closer relations between Canada and the European Union, including the possibility of Canada becoming an EU associate member. Speaking with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, Macron said the two countries would deepen cooperation on fisheries, security and energy. Carney said Canada and Europe would build an “Alliance for the Future.”
