> Yemen’s war has returned to global attention after the Iran-aligned Houthis made gains against forces loyal to the internationally recognised government and tightened their hold on the Red Sea coast. The conflict began with the Houthis’ 2014 takeover of northwestern Yemen and Sanaa, followed by Saudi-led intervention in 2015. A UN-brokered ceasefire largely held from 2022, while a proposed permanent-ceasefire roadmap agreed in 2023 was never formalised.
