# Why Tesla has been caught up in a massive car recall in China

> China has announced its biggest-ever car recall, affecting more than four million vehicles made by Tesla, XPeng, Xiaomi and others. Hidden door handles are under scrutiny because they may delay escape or rescue after crashes. New Chinese rules will require mechanical releases inside and outside doors from 1 January 2027.
