> North Korea has condemned the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises due to begin on August 17, calling them a provocation that raises tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang accused Washington of pushing the world “to the brink of nuclear war” and said it would strengthen its nuclear deterrence in response to what it described as a higher-level threat. The drills will run through August 27 and involve 18,000 South Korean troops alongside US forces in the country.
