> China’s strongest typhoon so far this year, White Dolphin, made landfall on 9 August and has continued to bring widespread rain and flooding to eastern and north-central China, reaching inland areas. The storm travelled more than 6,000km while retaining its strength. Scholars say El Niño’s impact on Pacific atmospheric circulation is one reason China’s inland and northern regions have seen more record-breaking typhoon rainfall in recent years.
