> Gavin Newsom announced that he will commute the death sentences of all 548 people on California’s death row to life without parole, the largest mass clemency in US history. He said state-sanctioned killing conflicts with California’s values and undermines the legal system. About two-thirds of the commutations require review by the California Supreme Court.
