# Hungary came ‘within millimetres’ of shutting nuclear plant amid drought crisis

> Hungary’s prime minister, Péter Magyar, said the country nearly had to shut down its nuclear power plant overnight. Extreme heat and falling water levels in the Danube have created challenges across south-eastern Europe. At about 1:30 a.m., the Paks Power Plant was reportedly just millimetres from a complete shutdown. The river then stopped falling and rose by 1.5 centimetres by morning. Magyar said the plant’s final turbine is operating safely.
