> More than 2,000 athletes from around the world are in Senegal for the Youth Olympic Games, Africa’s first Olympic event. IOC President Kirsty Coventry called it a milestone for Senegal and the continent, and a test of Africa’s ability to host major international sports events. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye said hosting was a proud moment, though critics argue the money could have been better spent amid economic challenges. The IOC is reviewing its direction and ways to cut hosting costs.
