> Poland’s centrist government says it is seeking to restore judicial independence after years of far-right political interference. A dispute over appointments to the Constitutional Tribunal escalated, drawing hundreds of protesters and riot police to the court in Warsaw. Judges elected by the parliamentary majority suspended the tribunal’s president and deputy, prompting condemnation from the nationalist opposition. President Karol Nawrocki cut short a trip to Senegal and returned to Poland.
