# Binance hack losses exceed total crypto theft over past two years, expert says

> Olga Goncharova of the Association of Banks of Russia said the roughly $6.3 billion taken from Binance exceeded crypto-market hacking losses over the prior two years, with most funds siphoned off in 20 minutes. She said it was too early to call the incident a critical security failure and suggested social engineering was more likely. Binance said attackers may have entered its internal infrastructure through an engineer’s compromised work laptop and plans to cover losses with its SAFU fund and corporate resources.
