> The French government estimated that at least 400,000 people joined Saturday’s marches, while unions put the turnout at twice that figure. Demonstrators backed students’ calls for more teachers and school repairs and protested the cost of living and heavy policing. Most marches were peaceful, but clashes broke out in Paris and other cities; police used tear gas and other weapons, and the interior ministry reported nearly 1,000 arrests.
