# French detention of tanker warrants international condemnation, Russian diplomat says

> Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko called France’s detention of the DF Peak tanker near Réunion an act of piracy and a violation of international law and the 1982 convention, saying it should be condemned internationally. He said no Russian nationals were aboard, but that did not change Moscow’s view. France said the seizure aimed to combat Russia’s so-called shadow fleet.
